Cragend Logs

Our plantation wood was planted for soft and hard wood over 40 years ago and the wood will now be rotationally harvested, with new planting to replace felled trees.

Wood Burning Stoves and Open Fires love Cragend Seasoned Wood.

The Coquet Plantation is a 40 acre wood belonging to Cragside Farm with a wide variety of trees, some over 100 years old, and was planted during the first Lord Armstrongs lifetime, when his vision for rhodedendron's and holly wallk's amongst teh crags came to fruition.

Trees such a beautiful Weeping Beech tree 'Fagus sylvatica' a cultivar of the European Beech are within the wood. It is characterised by its shape with sweeping, pendiulous branches. These trees can reach up to 25m high but tends to be wider than high because of its weeping branches which touch the ground.

This wood also has some "long lost Cragside carriage drives" which we are in the process of clearing.

Flora and Fauna are also visible in the woodland, with deer and red squirrels often spotted, and as a Site of Special Scientific interest (SSSI) on the banks of the River Coquet it is a beautiful area for wild orchids, primroses fungi and rare plants.

Our private woodland is also available if you wish to book a wildlife or camp experience. We support the local Scout Group, and "Wild About"  who regularly ask to use the wood for outdoor experiences.

Please call 01669 621 533 or email shaun.renwick@cragendfarm.co.uk to discuss your requirements.

Seasoned Logs for sale

Cragend logs are excellent quality. The logs are a consistent size which makes them easy to stack and they have been well seasoned. This makes them very easy to light and they burn really well – perfect for quickly heating up the house on a cold winter’s evening. Delivery was prompt and convenient. It is also nice to know that the logs are from a sustainable local source and that care has been taken throughout the whole delivery process. I will definitely be buying from Cragend Farm again.

Mr & Mrs S, Rothbury

Shaun & Lou Renwick are keen to harness the farm's natural resources, using wood to heat their water, to cook with on a wood burning range, and to heat the houses on the Farm. Even if your house is not equipped to totally run on wood there are things you can do to make sure you are using the best quality wood for your fires.

Why use Seasoned Wood?

Seasoned wood is a definition for 'wood drying'. About 5% of the energy of the log is wasted through evaporation and heating the water vapour of damp logs.

Moisture effects the burning process with unburnt hydrocarbons going up the chimney, which can in time create 'sooting' in the chimney, with the possibility of a chimney fire, all of which requires specialist sweeping.

Drying the wood before burning reduces moisture content in the wood before it is used for burning,

Air drying is the most traditional method, and it takes time. usually over and above 2 years! The fire will use less energy to burn the log if the water content is below 20%. Therefore is can give OUT more energy in the form of heat!

Cragend Farm endeavours to provide their customers with the best seasoned wood possible.

if you would like further information on the process of burning wood please contact us and we will be happy to help.
